European Capital of Culture program was launched by the Council of Ministers in 1985 as a result of an initiative of the Greek Minister of Culture - Melina Mercouri. The nominated city is announced the European Capital of Culture for one year and acquires the exceptional opportunity to promote its local culture within the European Union. During the period of the last twenty years more than thirty European cities have been nominated for the European Capital of Culture status.
