Tragic Destiny of Lithuanian Jews was Commemorated in Stockholm

On 19 June 2012 the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Sweden initiated a presentation of an exhibition “The Jewish World of Yesterday: pictures and stories from Centropa interviews in Lithuania” at the Jewish Community Centre of Stockholm. During the event discussions on Jewish life in Lithuania and Holocaust were initiated by the Ambassador of Lithuania Eitvydas Bajarunas and guest speakers. Diplomats, public figures, members of the Jewish Community of Stockholm participated at the event.

The audience was greeted by the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Sweden Eitvydas Bajarunas and one of the executives of the Jewish Community Centre of Stockholm John Gradowski. Representative of the Lithuanian Jewish Community Faina Kurkliansky, professor of Lund University Kristian Gerner and professor of Södertörn University David Gaunt acted as guest speakers and moderators of the discussions.

The concept of exposition was prepared by Centropa, an organization based Vienna. Its volunteers have interviewed 22 Jews in Lithuania and collected about 500 photographs; a part of them was displayed in this exhibition.

This exhibition has been funded by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Lithuania to commemorate the past of the Lithuanians Jews as well as to honor the memory of those Lithuanians who reached out to help them in their darkest hours.
