Lithuanian Ambassador in Sweden reviewed security trends in the Baltic Sea region

December 12th, 2012 Lithuanian Ambassador in Sweden Eitvydas Bajarūnas gave a speech at a conference “Trends in the Baltic Sea Region”, organized by the Swedish Atlantic Council and organization Society and Defense (Folk och Försvar). The Ambassador presented main security threats in the region. E. Bajarūnas noted that the main problems in the region are not just ones of a military nature. Other main security threats are related to ecology, spreading organized crime, migration, etc. It was also noticed that despite more and more intense cooperation in the field of security between the Nordic and Baltic countries, regionalization of security is impossible and NATO should remain the main security guaranty in the region. Ambassador also stressed the Baltic States’ energy dependency on the single external supplier.

Reports were also given by a famous American expert Metthew Bryza, Chairman of the Committee on Foreign Affairs of Riksdag Hans Wallmark, Ambassador of Poland Adam Halacinski, representatives of Russian Embassy, Swedish Defense Research Agency and media.

Lithuanian Ambassador‘s attendance at the conference is part of the functions that Lithuanian Embassy will take from January 1, 2013, as NATO Contact Point Embassy in Sweden.
