Invitation to an event: ”The Price of Freedom: January 13, 1991 in Lithuania“

In 2016 three Baltic countries – Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia - celebrate 25 years of restored independence. To mark this year, the Embassy of Lithuania will organize series of events. This is first event in this respect.

On 13th of January 1991, unarmed Lithuania struggled for its right to be a free, independent and democratic country. 14 people were killed, about 1000 were injured as the Soviet occupation army and the KGB attempted to overthrow the legitimate government of the country and to seize the Lithuanian national radio and television building, the TV tower and publishing houses.

The Ambassador of Lithuania, Mr. Eitvydas Bajarūnas has the pleasure of inviting you to a discussion on a historical memory and the Swedish reaction and perception of January 13, 1991 events in Lithuania:

Meet Håkan Holmberg, Political Editor-in-Chief, Uppsala Nya Tidning (former Member of Parliament, the Liberal Party of Sweden) and Mats Johansson (former Political Editor-in-chief of Svenska Dagbladet, former Member of Parliament, journalist, writer, the Moderate Party of Sweden), who were among the key organizers of the Norrmalmstorg’s Monday meetings in support of independence in Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania.
