Embassy of Lithuania has organized consultations with Sweden on financing of Ignalina NPP decommissioning

On the 21st of February Embassy of Lithuania in Sweden organized consultations for Adviser to Prime Minister of Lithuania Neilas Tankevičius with representatives of Swedish governmental institutions on the financing of decommissioning of Ignalina Nuclear Power Plant (INPP).

Representatives from Prime Minister’s Office, Ministries of Foreign Affairs, Environment and Finance participated in the event. Status quo of decommissioning process as well as future financial needs for this process was presented during consultations. Both sides also discussed Lithuanian and the EU commitments in this regard. Swedish representatives acknowledged the importance of this issue for Lithuania as well as the EU and confirmed the readiness to continue discussions on this topic in the future seeking to reach solution regarding decommissioning of INPP, which would be acceptable for all interested parties.

N. Tankevičius has also visited Swedish Radiations Safety Authority, where experience of Sweden in building, operating and decommissioning of nuclear plants was reviewed. During the meeting Swedish side has expressed the interest to develop close cooperation with competent Lithuanian institutions as well as to share information on the expert level regarding decommissioning of Ignalina NPP.
