Cooperation between Lithuania and Sweden in the field of transport and logistics was discussed in Malmö

On May 24, 2012, follow-up business seminar “Infrastructure developments and logistic opportunities between Lithuania and Sweden” took place in Malmö. Event was organized by the Embassy of Lithuania in Sweden, Skåne Region administration and Honorary Consul General of Lithuania in Malmö Ingmar Ingstad.  Adviser to Prime Minister of Lithuania A. Šakalys, Ambassador at Large for Transport and Energy issues V. Naudužas, representative from Klaipėda Municipality S. Gentvilas, representatives from Klaipėda Sea Port and Lithuanian Railways participated in the seminar. Swedish side was represented by Mayors of Malmö and Karlshamn, representatives from Skåne and Blekinge regions, Malmö-Copenhagen and Karlshamn ports, transport and logistics companies.  Implementation of strategic transport infrastructure projects (Viking, Saulė, Mercury), plans for development of infrastructure projects in Lithuania and Sweden as well as cooperation in implementing important transport project “East-West Transport Corridor” with the idea to create a corridor which will connect Asian and European markets by an alternative transport route were discussed during the seminar.

Lithuanian side has raised the initiative to open the new ferry line between Klaipėda and Malmö-Copenhagen ports. It was agreed to continue discussions on this issue on the working level.

In concluding remarks Ambassador of Lithuania E. Bajarūnas has stressed that cooperation in the field of transport is becoming very important element of bilateral cooperation with Sweden. He noted that this seminar was a very good platform where representatives from Governmental institutions and business community had an opportunity to share their views about future plans as well as the means to strengthen cooperation. Ambassador has suggested to organize the follow-up seminar in Klaipėda.
