CELEBRATION OF THE 20TH ANNIVERSARY OF RE-ESTABLISHMENT OF THE STATE OF LITHUANIA IN STOCKHOLM, 12/03/2010
On the 11th of March 2010 Lithuania marks the twentieth anniversary of re-establishment of the State of Lithuania. On this day in 1990 the -Supreme Council (Reconstituent Seimas) of the Republic of Lithuania declared the Act on the Re-establishment of the State of Lithuania, which “decrees and solemnly proclaims that the execution of the sovereign powers of the State of Lithuania, abolished by foreign forces in 1940, is re-established, and henceforth Lithuania is again an independent state”.
On this occasion the Lithuanian Embassy in Stockholm, the Lithuanian community in Sweden as well as friends of Lithuania commemorate this significant date on the 12th of March 2010 at 17.30 at Adolf Fredrik Church's parish house, Kammakargatan 30, Stockholm.
After the proclamation of independence, it was essential for Lithuania to be recognized by the international community. Thus, the Monday Meetings in support of the Baltic countries which took place in Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm, during 1990-1991 played very important role in Lithuania's way to overall independence. The organizers of the Monday Meetings will participate at this celebration, which will be hosted by the active participant of the Monday Meetings, actor, journalist and writer Arkadijus Vinokuras.
