Ambassador of Lithuania discussed bilateral relations with His Majesty King and Quenn of Sweden

On the 3rd of April 2012 Ambassador of Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Sweden Eitvydas Bajarūnas and his spouse Rita attended a special diplomatic reception which was held by the King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf. Ambassador had an opportunity to discuss relationship between Lithuania and Sweden in bilateral conversation with the King.   Photo from www.kungahuset.se Reception was held on the occasion of newly arrived Ambassadors and took place at the Princes Sibilia Apartments of the Royal Palace. King of Sweden Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia welcomed Ambassadors of Lithuania, Uruguay, Belgium, USA, Czech Republic, Palestine and their spouses. During their conversation with the Royal Couple Ambassador E. Bajarūnas exchanged ideas about political, economical and cultural cooperation between Sweden and Lithuania. Ambassador has introduced the priorities of Lithuanian foreign policy, including forthcoming Presidency of the EU Council in the second half of 2013.

There were also noted historical ties of both countries. This year turns 450 years from the date when Kotryna Jogailaite and future King of Sweden Johan III Vasa married on the 4th of October 1562 in Vilnius. It was the step towards the strengthening of Lithuanian, Polish and Swedish dynastic relations. Ambassador mentioned that this marriage took place in Vilnius Cathedral and Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania, which is rebuilding at the moment. King and Queen of Sweden had an opportunity to look over Palace of Grand Dukes of Lithuania during their visit to Lithuania in 2009, when there was commemoration of Lithuania’s Millennium. The remains of Johan and Kotryna are buried in the Uppsala Cathedral. The Vasa dynasty left a deep trace in Lithuanian and Polish history.

Ambassador has noted that King Carl XVI Gustaf and Queen Silvia are always very welcome in Lithuania.
