Ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas visited Katthammarsvik estate where in 1989 was signed Gotland's declaration

On July 2, during his visit to the island of Gotland (Sweden), Ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas visited Katthammarsvik estate. In August 6th, 1989, here at the meeting of representatives of Lithuania and diaspora Gotland declaration was signed which among others stated: "vital goal of world's Lithuanian is reestablishment of independent Lithuanian state”.

Gotland declaration laid the foundation for the restoration of Lithuanian independence in 1990, on March 11. Initiator of meeting Jonas Pajaujis lived near Katthammarsvik estate. At the meeting with the current owner of the estate Jakob Gustafson, ambassador finally agreed on the initiative to install a memorial plaque near this estate in commemoration of 25th anniversary of this prominent event. By the way, the idea of ​​a memorial plaque come about last year while one of participant of this meeting in 1989 Professor Vytautas Landsbergis was visiting Gotland.
