A new Lithuanian Honorary Consulate was opened in Jönköping, Sweden

On January 23, 2014 the Ambassador of the Republic of Lithuania Eitvydas Bajarūnas and Audrius Masiulionis, the Commercial attaché, participated in the opening ceremony of the new Lithuanian Honorary Consulate in Jönköping. Presenting the new Lithuanian Honorary Consul Gunnar Karl Johan Lans, the Ambassador of Lithuania in Sweden Eitvydas Bajarūnas, noted that the opening of a new Lithuanian Consulate in a 9th biggest city in Sweden, occupying a strategic position in the southern part of the country, will stimulate more active cooperation between the southern region of Sweden and Lithuania in the fields of industry, logistics, agriculture and in other areas of economics.

 

The new Honorary Consul has a degree in agricultural management and in marketing. Currently he is the head of the Jönköping association of the Swedish Federation of Farmers, the chairman of a regional investment company Jönköping Business Development Ltd., a board member of a local Swedbank branch as well as a member of the local administration.

During the visit of the Ambassador and the Commercial attaché in Jönköping meetings with the Governor Minoo Akhtarzand, mayor Mats Green and with others representatives of the region and the municipality took place. The guests had an opportunity to visit Jönköping University, where they had a meeting with the Governing Board of the university.

One more event was organised where among the guests was the director of Swedbank in Jönköping Fredrik Jutnäs and other businessmen, intending to develop business projects in Lithuania. In addition, meetings with Jonas Ekeroth, the director of Jönköping Chamber of Commerce, and with Mim Andersson, the head of Elmia Exhibition and Convention Centre, were organised.

Jönköping is situated in the southern part of Sweden, near Vättern, the second biggest lake in Sweden. The figures of 2010 show, that the population of the city was 89,396 people, while the population of the whole region in 2013 is 339 116. Today Jönköping is a well known Swedish logistic centre, where the warehouses of such companies as IKEA, Electrolux and Husqvarna are located. What is more, the city includes Swedish main Exhibition and Convention Centre Elmia and Elmia Wood fair is the biggest forestry fair in the world. The subcontractor, railway, and truck fairs are organised in Jönköping and are the biggest in Europe.

At the moment, there are 8 Lithuanian Honorary Consuls in Sweden.
