A discussion on Romain Gary’s personality and creation held in Stockholm
On 27 April the Embassy of the Republic of Lithuania to the Kingdom of Sweden together with Ecole Française in Stockholm and French teachers association in Sweden organized an event to talk about a famous writer Romain Gary who was born in Vilnius.
The guests of the event were greeted by the Lithuanian ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas who gladly noted that a 100th anniversary of the birth of Romain Gary was among the Anniversaries of historic events and of eminent personalities celebrated by Member States and Associate Member in association with UNESCO in 2014-2015. “This is also a great occasion to present the writer’s personality and work to the international community and to contribute to the promotion of tolerance and intercultural dialogue”, noted the ambassador.
In the framework of the event a lecture “The Hollywood of Life. Romain Gary as Self-Inventor” was given by Karolis Klimka. Lithuanian critic and translator introduced the influence of Vilnius on Gary’s writings. It is especially noticeable in the novel Promise at Down where picturing of Vilnius, helps to understand Gary’s tense and creative relationship with his identity and past.
The guests also listened to a performance by Brass Quintet (Stockholm): Jaan Sule (trumpet), Lars Johansson (trumpet), Björn Bladh(horn), Herman Appelgren (euphonium) and Anders Östman (trombone).
