      On 25 March Ambassador of Lithuania Eitvydas Bajarūnas paid a visit to Södertörn University, located  in the southern  Stockholm. The University was presented by Södertörn University`s  Vice-Chancellor, Rector Professor Moira von Wright and her team. Also a meeting with the Centre for Baltic and East European Studies (CBEES) was held. In the meeting participated Rebecka Lettevall, Director CBEES, Joakim Ekman, Professor, CBEES, Gunnar Nygren, Professor, Journalism, Milda Celiešiūtė, Doctoral Student, Journalism, Jan-Olof Gullö, Phd, Deputy Head of School of Social Sciences. During the meetings prospects of the future cooperation were discussed.

    • Nuclear energy safety issues discussed with the State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Sweden Added2015.03.24

      On 23 March Lithuanian Ambassador Eitvydas Bajarūnas was accepted by Yvonne Ruwaida, State Secretary of the Ministry of Environment and Energy of Sweden. During the conversation the need to continue to bring international attention to the issues of nuclear safety in the Baltic Sea region was discussed, taking into account two nuclear projects in Belarus and Kaliningrad being implemented in the vicinity of Lithuania and Sweden. Also the need to continue to seek high ambitions concerning climate changes was higlihted. Nordic and Baltic cooperation on environment issues were also addressed during the meeting.

      On 7-8th March the members of Stockholm Lithuanian Business Club visited Helsinki where they met Lithuanian businessmen who work in Finland. The guests were greeted by Ambassador of Lithuania to Finland Arūnas Jievaltas. The meeting of the members of the business clubs was held at the Lithuanian Embassy in Finland and the participants shared their experience of working and running business in Northern Europe, discussed the possibilities of future collaboration. The Ambassador of Lithuania to Sweden Eitvydas Bajarūnas addressed the participants by stressing that Lithuanian businessmen working in the region are contributing to the economic collaboration of the two countries, so the development of new sorts of business together with the ongoing collaboration are highly promoted.

      On 25 March in Canberra, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius and the Speaker of the House of Representatives of Australia Bronwyn Kathleen Bishop discussed Lithuania’s goal and preparation to join the Organisation of Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) among other bilateral political and economic topics. “Lithuania aims at becoming a member of the OECD and we are grateful for Australia’s support,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

      We are all shocked at the news of the Germanwings plane crash in the area of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence in Southern France. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania expresses its heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of the victims. We hope this disaster will be thoroughly investigated.

    • Lithuanian and Australian Foreign Ministers discuss bilateral relations and key international policy issues Added2015.03.23

      At the meeting in Canberra on 23 March with Australian Minister for Foreign Affairs Julie Bishop, Lithuanian Minister of Foreign Affairs Linas Linkevičius informed her about Lithuania’s preparations and implementation of the Action Plan for joining the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). “Membership in OECD is the most important goal for Lithuania now. I am glad to receive  good evaluation from the Australian colleagues of Lithuania’s efforts to start accession procedures to OECD,” said the head of Lithuania’s diplomacy.

      In the view of announced signature of so-called “treaty” High Representative of the European Union for foreign affairs and security policy Federica Mogherini stated that it “clearly violates Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, principles of international law and the international commitments taken by the Russian Federation, including the 12 August 2008 Agreement and its Implementing Measures of 8 September 2008 and has no legal standing”.       At the General Affairs Council meeting on 17 March in Brussels, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, emphasised the importance of a unified and strong EU policy stance towards Russia. “Russia has openly admitted it has annexed Crimea. Russia fails to comply substantially with the Minsk agreements. For these reasons, the EU should keep up the pressure on Russia. We have to extend the existing sanctions and consider new sanctions if the situation keeps deteriorating,” stressed the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.

      At the Foreign Affairs Council meeting on 16 March in Brussels, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius, speaking about the upcoming Eastern Partnership Summit on 21-22 May 2015, noted that it was important to determine a strategic direction for Eastern Partnership and take a further step forward from the Warsaw and Vilnius Summits. “We need to send a clear and strategic political signal to our Eastern neighbours that the EU remains ambitious and committed to fulfilling its obligations. The Eastern Partnership countries have to choose their own path towards development and it has to be defended. We cannot allow Russia to influence our policies,” said the Lithuanian Foreign Minister.

      At the bilateral meeting on 10 March in Vilnius, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Lithuania Linas Linkevičius expressed his gratitude to the Minister for Foreign Affairs of Iceland Gunnar Bragi Sveinsson for his country’s courageous action – recognition of Lithuania’s independence on 11 February 1991.  In June,  this event will be commemorated in Vilnius by civic campaign “Thank You, Iceland”.
